Musing Mondays

MizB at Should Be Reading hosts Musing Mondays. This week’s musing asks . . . Below is a link to an NPR discussion about the simple fact that there’s no way you can read, see and experience all the things that are available to be experienced. The two methods for dealing with it are culling (i.e., cutting out certain genres that don’t interest you, etc.) or surrender (i.e., just making peace with the facts and enjoying what you can in the time that you have).

So, do you cull, or do you surrender? Or do you do both?

I definitely cull. If I'm not interested, I'm not reading it. I know what I enjoy, and I won't waste the little time I have to read on something I'm not into, i.e. fantasy, science fiction, most politics.

  1. I think I do a little bit of both. Whether I am interested or not if it is there to read, I like to read, I typically read it. If someone is talking to me about it and I "cull" I probably will not be as engaged in the conversation. And there are things that I just surrender at times, politics is one of them. I DO NOT like talking to others about my political views. Again I will listen to others I may interject a tidbit here or there but will not get deeply engrossed. And I am with you fantasy and sci fi totally not into it. Have a great 4th of July!

  2. The only thing I've culled was all the Twilight books. LOL.

  5. I do both, but I definitely lean more toward culling. Surrendering is more an overarching philosophy of "You can't read 'em all."

  6. I think I tend more to surrender.
Sure, you must cull to some degree (so many books, so little time...), but I also think you have to stay a little open to every genre. Especially if it come with a really strong recommendation.
but life is too short to waste reading a book tht you do not love.
