Back to School Daze

Amid the chaos and upset surrounding my mother's illness, not only was it back to school for R, the 5 year old, it was the first day of preschool for D, the 2 year old. Oy, what a morning!

R is in full-day Kindergarten and going back after 10 days off was rough for him. At least he waited until we got to drop-off to carry on. But the tears did come and the whining ensued. I'm sure 99% of the teachers wanted to cry as well. Going back after a substantial break stinks.

Then it was D's turn. He's familiar with the preschool since he came along for the drop and pick up of big brother last year. He went in fine and was actually pretty excited to play in a room full of "new" toys. He was completely distracted while I slipped away. Of course, too good to be true.

The call came about 1/2 hour later when D realized I wasn't in the room. I picked him up a little early but he hung in there for a good 2 hours.

On the ride home, I looked in the rearview mirror and D was staring straight ahead. He looked kind of shell-shocked. I couldn't help but laugh. I think he was just a tad bit overwhelmed by it all.

I'm anticipating a nightmare scenario when we go back tomorrow.
